Steve Osborne of Raymond, a native of Millinocket, has been named to the Athletic Hall of Fame at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish, and will be inducted during ceremonies on Sept. 16.
Osborne, one of seven new inductees into the Saint Joseph’s hall, is the most decorated baseball player in school history. He finished his career as the college leader in batting average (.430), home runs (42), hits (220) and runs scored (183). In 2001, he established single-season records for runs (64), batting average (.481), hits (77) home runs (22) and RBI (79). In addition, he was named Maine Athletic Conference player of the year, an NAIA honorable mention All-America, and the 2001 NCAA Division III statistical champion for slugging percentage (1.031).
Osborne also was selected to play in the 2001 New England College Baseball All-Star Game at Fenway Park in Boston, and the NCAA Home Run Challenge held during the 2001 College World Series at Omaha, Neb. He was the first St. Joseph’s baseball player to sign a professional baseball contract when he signed with the New York Yankees in 2001.
Joining Osborne in the Saint Joseph’s Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2006 are basketball player Mike Johnson of Portland, former coach Jean Zimmerman of South Portland, soccer and basketball player Karen Matheson Rogers of Gorham, distance runner Stu Hogan of Old Orchard Beach, baseball player Leon Renaud of East Waterboro, and softball and softball player Hope Favreau of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Topsham.
