PORTLAND – A federal judge has ordered a man who pleaded guilty to setting a fire that burned down Fryeburg Academy’s gymnasium last October to pay nearly $1.8 million in restitution.

Judge Brock Hornby also sentenced Philip Thibault, a 20-year-old 2003 graduate of the western Maine school, to 40 months in federal prison. Thibault, who had pleaded guilty to an arson charge, was sentenced Wednesday.

Prosecutors had recommended a reduced sentence for Thibault for testifying against his co-defendant, 19-year-old Maxx Noble, also a former academy student.

Last month, a jury in U.S. District Court convicted Noble of conspiracy but acquitted him of arson. That means the longest sentence he faces when he is sentenced is five years.
