MMA rolls in opener Hamilton guides Mariners to win

CASTINE – Senior quarterback Brandon Hamilton of Skowhegan ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third as the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners opened their football season with a 33-14 victory over Becker College of Worcester, Mass., Saturday.

Hamilton rushed for touchdowns from 16 and 5 yards out, and passed 32 yards to Brian Matthews for another scores as MMA built a 33-0 lead.

Nate Bolduc returned a fumble for a touchdown, and Jim Bower added a 2-yard scoring run for the Mariners.

Men’s soccer

Sacred Heart 1, Maine 0

At Fairfield, Conn., Jason Tessitore scored with 28:08 left in the second half to lift the Pioneers past the winless Black Bears.

The winning goal was set up by a lob pass from Anthony Anzevui. Tessitore then took the ball just inside the 18-yard box, moved in and used a dribble fake to deek Maine goalie Dereck Loisel. With Loisel on the ground, Tessitore had an open net to score the goal.

Loisel made four saves on 18 shots for 0-6 Maine. Matthew Jones made two saves on eight shots for 1-1-1 Sacred Heart.

Dimitri Anastasiou and Jimmy Velas paced Maine’s offense with three shots each.

So. Maine 1, Worcester St. 0

At Worcester, Mass., Greg Cox scored an unassisted goal 19:47 into the match to provide the Huskies of Gorham their margin of victory.

Greg Willard made three saves on 13 shots for 2-2 Southern Maine, including a stop on a penalty kick. Albert Jenkins made seven saves on 15 shots for 1-2 Worcester State.

Colby 1, Tufts 1

At Somerville, Mass., Todd Boertzel scored 4:33 into the contest as Colby of Waterville held on for a tie in its season opener.

Dan Jozwiak tied the game 16 minutes into the second half.

Josh Kahane made eight saves on 20 shots for 0-0-1 Colby. Pat Tonelli made six saves on 15 shots for 0-0-1 Tufts.

UM-Presque Isle Kickoff Classic

At Presque Isle, the University of Maine-Fort Kent defeated Husson 2-1 on Saturday and Maine Maritime Academy 3-1 on Sunday in the University of Presque Isle Kickoff Classic. In Saturday’s first game, UM-Presque Isle beat MMA 1-0 and on Sunday Husson defeated UM-Presque Isle 2-0.

In Saturday’s first game, Matt Free scored at 36:52 in the first half for UM-Presque Isle. Scott Clenchy stopped all three shots. Joshua Heath made five saves on six shots for Maine Maritime.

In Saturday’s second game, Lewis Arnold scored both goals for UMFK, including the game winner at 57:58 in the second half. Derek Plourde made nine saves on 10 shots. Oscar Ody scored a first-half goal for Husson. Jon Coule made 15 saves on 17 shots.

In Sunday’s first game, Nathan Carter and Ody both scored first-half goals for Husson. Coule turned away all seven shots. Clenchy made eight saves on 10 shots for UMPI.

In Sunday’s second game, Dwayne Smith scored two goals and assisted the other for UMFK. Andy Martin had a goal and an assist as Derek Plourde made four saves on five shots. Joshua Coffin scored an unassisted goal for Maine Maritime.

Unity 4, Vermont Technical 1

At Randolf Center, Vt., Matt Belonick scored a goal and recorded two assists to lead Unity by Vermont Technical College.

John Korkos, Ryan Howes and Matt Pickowicz each had a goal in the second half. Tyler Ferguson stopped all six shots for the 2-1 Rams.

Chris Starling made 12 saves on 16 shots for the 2-1 Green Knights.

Field hockey

Tufts 4, Colby 1

At Medford, Mass., Marlee Kutcher scored two goals and provided an assist to lead Tufts University on Saturday.

Michelle Kelly and Brittany Holiday scored for 1-0 Tufts. Mary Clare Snediker scored an unassisted goal in the first half for 0-1 Colby. Jamie Enos stopped 10 of 16 shots.

Westfield State 2, USM 1 (2OT)

At Westfield, Mass., Kara Guittarr scored an unassisted goal 46 seconds into the second overtime to lead Westfield State College to victory on Saturday.

Caitlin Albert scored on a Nicole Bombardi assist at 2:58 for 0-3 University of Southern Maine. Allie Hill stopped 11 of 17 shots.

UMF 3, St. Joseph’s 1

At Standish, Erica Lucas scored a goal and grabbed an assist to lead University of Maine-Farmington by Saint Joseph’s College.

Kristin Chambers and Elyse Cole each added a goal while Andrea Tyler tallied two assists. Kaeleigh Barker made five saves on nine shots for UMF.

Deucey Ward netted an unassisted goal while Karrie Sirois made four saves on 23 shots for Saint Joseph’s.

Women’s soccer

Maine 5, Holy Cross 1

At Worcester, Mass., Veronique Fleury and Laura Martel each scored two goals as Maine remained unbeaten.

Laura Harper added a goal and two assists for the 4-0-1 Black Bears, while Kim Stephenson also had an assist.

Shelby Stand scored an unassisted goal for 0-4-1 Holy Cross.

Jasmine Phillips made five saves on 11 shots for Maine. Jessica Pietrowicz and Jessica Stone made seven saves on 17 shots for Holy Cross.

Saint Joseph’s 2, So. Maine 1

At Gorham, Heidi Stucki scored with less than seven minutes left to give the Monks of Standish the win.

Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Camden’s Caitlin Brown, but Saint Joseph’s tied the game before intermission on a goal by Katie Jordan.

Monica Cuda made four saves on eight shots for 1-0 Saint Joseph’s. Mindy Morneault of Eagle Lake made five saves on 12 shots for 1-3 USM.

Colby 0, Tufts 0 (OT)

At Somerville, Mass. Liza Benson made nine saves on 20 shots as Colby of Waterville earned the season-opening tie with third-ranked Tufts.

Annie Ross made six saves on eight shots for Tufts.

St. Joseph’s 1, Plymouth 0 (2OT)

At Standish, Katie Jordan scored an unassisted goal 3:12 into the second overtime to push Saint Joseph’s College past Plymouth State University on Sunday.

Monica Cuda made six saves on 19 shots for the 2-0 Monks.

Morgan McQuaide stopped four of 10 shots for 2-1 Plymouth State.

Coast Guard 1, Southern Maine 0

At Gorham, Katie Kurek scored an unassisted goal at 11:43 into the first half to lead U.S. Coast Guard Academy past the University of Southern Maine on Sunday.

Mindy Mourneault and Cyndi Michaels combined to stop five of nine shots for 1-4 Southern Maine.

Husson Tournament

At Bangor, Husson College defeated the University of Maine-Presque Isle 7-0 on Saturday and tied Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College of California 2-2 in double-overtime on Sunday in the Husson Tournament. In Saturday’s second game, Claremont Mudd-Scripps beat Western New England 3-2. On Sunday, Western New England topped UM-Presque Isle 7-0.

In Saturday’s first game, Katie Nickerson had a hat trick with three goals for Husson. Shelby Pickering added two goals and an assist. Elissa Gordon had a goal and an assist and Shelby Morissette scored a goal. Shaina Goode provided an assist as Leah Drew stopped the only shot she faced. Billie Martin made 13 saves on 20 shots for UM-Presque Isle.

In Sunday’s first game, Goode scored an unassisted goal at 89:15 to tie the game for 2-0-1 Husson and force two overtime periods. Pickering scored an unassisted goal at 49:06. Drew turned away 15 of 17 shots. Megan Kim scored both goals for 2-1-1 Claremont Mudd-Scripps.

In Sunday’s second game, Katie Gomes scored two goals for 2-3 Western New England. Martin made 27 saves on 34 shots for 0-4 UM-Presque Isle.

UMFK 2, Atlantic Baptist 1

At Fort Kent, Jeanne Frazer scored on a Sarah Pinette assist with 27:41 left in regulation to lead the University of Maine at Fort Kent past Atlantic Baptist University in the Bengal Kick-Off Classic on Sunday.
