Sept. 11 events All U.S. and Maine flags are to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Monday, Sept. 11

AUGUSTA – Noon ceremony, steps of east entrance to State House on Sept. 11, to remember those lost in the 2001 attacks and to recognize those who helped in the immediate response and long-term recovery. Participants will include Gov. John Baldacci, Senate President Beth Edmonds, House Speaker John Richardson, Senate Minority Leader Paul Davis, House Assistant Minority Leader Joshua Tardy, Sen. Arthur Mayo and Bath firefighter Capt. Michael Clarke. Ceremony will include Bath Fire Department color guard.

BANGOR – Penobscot Job Corps Academy will hold a Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony at the academy, 1375 Union St., next to the dining commons in the tall pine trees at 8:35 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11. The ceremony is for reflection on the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Rain location is the gym.

BANGOR – Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St., will hold a series of discussions and presentations beginning Monday, Sept. 11. The September Project is an effort to get people together to talk about issues that matter, to make sense of the world, to remember Sept. 11 and assess its impact on the community and on society. Discussions will kick off with Richard Powell, a political science professor at the University of Maine, who will lead a panel of media specialists who will discuss how the news has changed since Sept. 11.

BANGOR – Bangor Fire Department will remember firefighters who risked or lost their lives in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in a ceremony at 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at the Central Fire Station on Main Street. During the ceremony, an old chrome fire station bell will be struck in a series of five rings three times to signify the Box 555 alarm call that signifies a firefighter has been killed. A video presentation of the resolution as well as comments from New York firefighters will be shown.

BELFAST – Outdoor memorial, football field, Belfast Area High School, sponsored by National Honor Society. Event will honor victims of Sept. 11, 2001, and those who sacrifice for the nation’s security. Twenty-minute ceremony open to the public, 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11.

ORONO – Orono Fire Department will mark the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks with a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11. There will be readings, music and tolling of bells at the exact times of the attacks. The Flag of Honor, containing the names of those who died in the attacks, will be on display as well as the Flag of Heroes, listing the names of firefighters, police, Port Authority of New York personnel and volunteers who died. Original artwork by Orono firefighter Denis Bean will be displayed.

EASTPORT – An “America Supports You Freedom Walk” will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11. It will start at Eastport Elementary School and end at the statue of the fisherman downtown.
