Bangor man arrested for assault after emergency room dispute

A trip to the emergency room ended in arrest for a Bangor man Sunday evening.

A call was made around 7 p.m. from Eastern Maine Medical Center saying a patient had assaulted the person who had brought him to the hospital. Officer Chris Desmond responded.

According to police reports, Michael Middleton, 31, had been brought to the emergency room because he had been threatening to kill himself. Middleton was intoxicated and was awaiting mental evaluation when Officer Desmond arrived.

Police reports state that after Middleton had been admitted, he got very upset, turned to the victim and spit in her face. Middleton denied having spit in the victim’s face on purpose, saying he was spitting because he was upset and didn’t mean to hit her. He and the victim have been living together in the Hope House for approximately a month.

The victim told police that Middleton had previously spit on and punched her and that she wanted to get away from him.

After talking to witnesses, Desmond determined that Middleton had purposely spit on the victim and arrested him for assault when his blood alcohol level was low enough for him to be released and taken to Penobscot County Jail.

Police arrested a man for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants on Griffin Road in Bangor late Sunday night.

Officer Chris Desmond was informed by police dispatch that a man was seen driving as if intoxicated on Griffin Road. According to police reports, he found Peter Mackin, 42, of Bangor attempting to pull into Griffin Park. After Mackin had parked the vehicle, Desmond approached and asked him to step out.

When Mackin got out of the vehicle, police documents state Desmond noticed several empty beer cans in the passenger side of the vehicle. Mackin failed the field sobriety tests and was arrested for OUI. The Intoxylizer test performed at the police station showed a blood alcohol level of 0.19 percent.
