NEWRY – Joe Alvarez of Bangor posted a 5-over-par total of 149 at Sunday River Golf Club over the weekend to win the Maine Mid-Amateur Golf Championship by four strokes.
The tournament is for players age 25 or older.
Alvarez, who plays out of Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono, opened with an even-par 72 on Saturday that included a hole-in-one on the 206-yard, par-3 fourth hole. He added a 77 on Sunday to hold off Mike Nowak of Augusta Country Club in Manchester, who closed with a 75 for 153.
Michael Lee of Riverside Municipal Golf Course in Portland took third with 77-78-153, and Brent Mohr (82-75) of York Golf and Tennis Club, Nicholas Conner (82-75) of Riverside, and Tom Bean (76-81) of Augusta tied for fourth at 157.
