High school senior named to town panel

HOLDEN – After an interview, town councilors on Monday appointed residents Candice Braley and Ryan Warner, a high school senior, to the town’s Conservation Commission, Town Manager Larry Varisco said Tuesday.

“[Warner] explained that he was interested in political science and environmental issues,” the town manager said, adding that Warner also is a junior firefighter for the town. “He’s involved and wanted to be more involved.”

Warner is a senior at Bangor High School who participates in cross-county and is on the swim team.

Both Braley and Warner were appointed to three-year terms on the seven-member panel.

The town’s conservation commission has several ongoing projects including work on a proposed four-season, shared-use trail that would use the Brewer-Calais Railroad rail bed; improving and maintaining access to other trails and local waterways; and improving the town through conservation efforts.

During Monday’s meeting, councilors also approved adding another $5,000 to the Comprehensive Plan Committee consulting contract and holding a public hearing on the draft plan at 6 p.m. Sept. 27, at the town hall.

Councilors also reviewed a proposed change to a portion of the subdivision ordinance concerning steep slopes that would clarify wording and make the policy a little more flexible, Varisco said.

A pubic hearing on the proposed change is scheduled for the next month’s meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 9.
