No new clues revealed on fatal Hartland fire

HARTLAND – State police provided no update Tuesday in the investigation into the suspicious fire and deaths of what they believe is an estranged Hartland couple.

Police think the two bodies found on Sunday in the charred remains of a house fire on Vigue Road are those of Timothy Spaulding, 45, and Linda Spaulding, 44, but positive identifications have not been made.

The Spauldings had built the home together several years ago but then divorced, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. The couple recently had reconciled, but Timothy Spaulding had moved out over a week ago.

The home once had been in both names, according to town records, but Timothy Spaulding’s name recently was taken off the property.

Examinations were made Tuesday at the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta, where the bodies were taken on Monday, but no new details were released. McCausland said more information may be provided today.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has deemed the fire “suspicious,” and investigators said it began in the second -floor living quarters of the home. The home was a two-story wooden building with a garage on the first floor and the living space on the second floor.

“The damage was so severe and the fire so intense that the cause of the fire cannot be pinpointed,” McCausland said.
