Orono police charge man with assault

Orono police charged a Portland man Tuesday morning with assault after authorities were called to the Black Bear Inn after a report of a fight inside one of the rooms.

Outside the room, Officer Willy King could hear a man threatening someone inside saying that he was going to hurt her, according to the police. King announced he was a police officer and entered the room where he confronted Walter Begaye, 40, about what was going on.

Begaye told King that he would never hurt his wife and the 60-year-old woman refused to fill out a domestic violence worksheet, detailing what had happened. She did tell police that Begaye had grabbed her by the arms and shoved her against the walls.

A transient man who was seen Monday trying to get into a car parked outside the Atlantic Awards business on Hammond Street in Bangor was arrested a short distance away when he struggled with police investigating the incident.

The car’s owner had contacted police to say that the man had been peering into her car and had tried to get into it.

Shawn Burgess, 35, was located near the guardrail of the Interstate 95 on-ramp and struggled when Officer Dan Herrick went to handcuff him. Both men ended up on the outside of the guardrail with Burgess in handcuffs. He was charged with refusing to submit to arrest and failure to give a correct name.

A Bangor man was injured Tuesday when he lost control of the motorcycle he was riding and struck a guardrail of the Interstate 395 off-ramp onto Main Street.

Mark White,36, was still being evaluated at Eastern Maine Medical Center at 10:15 p.m. nearly five hours after the accident. Trooper Darren Vittum investigated the accident and said White lost control of the motorcycle on the off-ramp and struck the guardrail. He said speed may have been a factor. White was wearing a helmet and protective clothing, the trooper said.

For a second time in three days, a Bangor man was charged Monday with violating bail conditions by visiting a residence and being with a woman he was prohibited from seeing.

David Kern, 37, also had been drinking alcohol, another violation of his bail conditions that stemmed from recent incidents. Kern was arrested Sept. 2 for assaulting the woman he was with and on Sept. 8 was arrested for violating bail conditions when police found him back at the same First Street address with the same woman.

Again Monday, police were called to the First Street residence for a report of a fight. Officer James Dearing went to the apartment and reported that he was by the door when Kern, seeing Officer Rob Angelo pull up, tried unsuccessfully to make a hasty retreat.
