SHAWN SMITH
Smith, a sophomore quarterback for the Hampden Academy football team, completed 7 of 9 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns as the Broncos defeated Morse of Bath 34-26. Smith also had a pass interception for the 1-1 Broncos.
Small School (Classes C-D)
COREY JOHNSTON
Johnston, a forward on the Calais boys soccer team, scored eight goals in three Blue Devils’ victories. Johnston scored once in a 2-0 victory over Houlton that was halted at halftime due to lightning. He followed that up with a five-goal outburst during a 9-4 victory over Washington Academy of East Machias, and had two goals Wednesday as Calais beat Woodland 4-1.
GIRLS
Big School (Classes A-B)
HILARY MAXIM
A junior on the Old Town cross country team, Maxim captured her third individual race win of the season, taking the Bucksport Invitational in a time of 19 minutes, 15 seconds. She also won a 2.5-miler at Orono last week and the Ellsworth Invitational earlier this season.
Small School (Classes C-D)
NICOLE CHASSE
Chasse, a junior forward for the Fort Kent girls soccer team, figured into three big wins for the 6-3 Eastern Maine Class C Warriors, who have won straight games. She scored a goal in a 4-2 victory over previously undefeated Class D Van Buren, put in three goals and an assist in a 10-0 victory over Class C Penquis, and chipped in with an assist as Fort Kent knocked off previously undefeated Class B Presque Isle 2-1.
