Race for the Cure
The 10th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will be held Sunday, Sept. 17, on the waterfront. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., the 1K walk at 10:30 a.m., and the 5K run-walk at 11 a.m.
The Maine affiliate announced recently that Dora and Don Winslow are the honorary chairmen for the race. Dora Winslow is a two-year survivor of breast cancer.
“It really is amazing, all the energy you get from all the other survivors around you at the race, and from the people there to support us,” Winslow said.
Don Winslow has participated in the race in the past but has a whole new perspective on the importance of the event since his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Dora and I were looking for something we could do to have a positive influence on eradicating breast cancer. We were thrilled to be asked to be honorary chairs. We didn’t have to think about it at all,” he said.
The mission of the Komen Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. One woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the United States.
