Review finds Houlton budget on target through first half of ’06

HOULTON – A customary midyear review of the town’s finances revealed nothing out of the ordinary to town officials, and town councilors unanimously agreed to accept the document during a meeting earlier this week.

The report covered six months of finances from January to June 30, and was conducted by RHR Smith & Co. of Buxton.

“There were no surprises in here to me,” Town Manager Doug Hazlett told councilors during the meeting. “At midyear, we have spent 49.2 percent of the budget.”

Council Chairman Paul Romanelli pointed out that the audit only told “half of the story” as the town has not yet begun collecting tax revenue.

The board set the 18.5 mill rate late last month and mailed out the tax bills a short time later. The town will begin to generate revenue as the deadline to pay tax bills looms early next month.

In other business, councilors:

. Approved an application to the Department of Public Safety’s Licensing and Application Unit for a renewal of liquor license for Governor’s Restaurant in Houlton.

. Accepted a 1986 Chevrolet Blazer from the town of Kennebunk to be used by the Houlton Police Department.
