Harmony man, 87, struck, killed by truck

HARMONY – An elderly Harmony man, who was a former, longtime town treasurer, was struck and killed as he attempted to retrieve his mail just after noon Saturday.

Ashley Rowell, 87, of Route 150 was hit by a 2000 GMC pickup truck operated by Gary Gourley, 61, of Athens and pronounced dead at the scene.

Gourley was headed south on the rural highway. After the accident, he was taken to Redington Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, complaining of chest pains.

Somerset County Deputy Ritchie Putnam said the accident remains under investigation and so far it is unclear where Rowell was when he was struck.

Putnam said the day was clear and sunny and there is tenth-of-a-mile visibility in both directions where the crash occurred.

“Mr. Gourley said he did not see the man in the road,” Putnam said.

The deputy was assisted at the scene by Deputy Eugene Cole and Maine State Police Trooper Jon Wilson.
