UMaine volleyball wins twice Central Michigan, Indiana defeat Black Bears in field hockey

BRONX, N.Y. – The University of Maine volleyball team picked up its first two wins of the season Saturday, defeating New Jersey Institute of Technology 30-18, 34-32, 30-18 and St. Peter’s 30-23, 30-19, 30-11 in the Rose Hill Classic hosted by Fordham University.

In the first match, Laura Goettsch led the Bears with nine kills and a block. Shelly Seipp had 34 assists, three service aces and six kills.

In the second match, Lindsay Allman had 13 kills and four service aces. Amy Lawson tallied eight kills and the only block of the match. Seipp added four aces as the Bears improve to 2-8.

Field hockey

Maine drops two games

At Bloomington, Ind., the University of Maine Black Bears dropped two games over the weekend, losing 2-1 to Central Michigan in overtime on Saturday and 3-0 to 14th-ranked Indiana on Sunday.

In Saturday’s game, Kirsten Costa gave Maine the early lead, scoring on an Amy Zdrojesky assist, but the Bears couldn’t hold on.

Kelly Jordan scored for Central Michigan to tie the game and Kim Erasmus notched the game-winner in overtime.

Rebecca Giroux made five saves on nine shots for the 3-4 Black Bears. Danielle Frank saved five of nine shots as Central Michigan improves to 4-2.

In Sunday’s game, Indiana scored two goals in the first half en route to the win.

Morgan Miller, Haley Funk and Kate O’Connell scored for the 7-1 Hoosiers. Baley Exner made five saves on seven shots.

Maygan Cassarino saved nine of 15 shots for the 3-5 Black Bears.

St. Joseph’s 3, Simmons 2 (2OT)

At Boston on Saturday, freshman Jillian Kimball scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to lead Saint Joseph’s of Standish past Simmons.

Darcy Ward scored two goals, one on a Kristine Benere assist and the other on a penalty stroke, for the 1-3 Monks. Karrie Sirois made six saves on 18 shots.

Kristen Perkins and Elizabeth Hennigan each tallied a goal for 0-5 Simmons.

Bowdoin 2, Colby 0

At Waterville on Saturday, Burgess LePate scored two goals and Kate Leonard recorded the shutout as Bowdoin downed Colby.

Katherine Formley and Lindsay McNamara each tallied an assist for the 4-0 Polar Bears of Brunswick. Leonard made five saves on seven shots. Jamie Enos stopped 17 of 34 shots for the 0-2 White Mules.

Southern Maine 4, Salem State 1

At Gorham, freshman India Lowe scored two goals Saturday to lead Southern Maine to its first win of the season.

Nicole Bombardi scored on a Brianna Thompson assist and Samantha Johnson added two assists. Caitlin Albert chipped in a goal and Allie Hill made five saves on 12 shots for the 1-5 Huskies.

Kristen Bartlett scored on a pass from Meghan Cassidy for the 1-2 Vikings.

UM-Farmington wins two

At Boston and Cambridge, Mass., the University of Maine-Farmington opened North Atlantic Conference play, beating Lasell 2-1 and Wheelock 4-0 and improving to 3-0.

In Saturday’s game, Elyse Cole and Alyssa St. Pierre scored on feeds from Andrea Tyler and Erika Lucas, respectively, on their way to the win. Kaeleigh Barker made one save.

In Sunday’s game, Tyler tallied a goal and two assists to lead the Beavers past Wheelock. Cole scored a goal and Lucas scored on an Amanda Pullen assist. St. Pierre added an assist.
