BANGOR – Michelle (Qian) Yang has completed the summer intern program in U.S. Rep. Michael Michaud’s Bangor district office.

The daughter of Dr. Chuncai Yang and Guizhen Feng of Glenburn, Yang graduated from John Bapst Memorial High School in June and has started her first year at the University of Pennsylvania. She hopes to major in both international relations and international finance.

Yang sought out the internship because she has been interested in the U.S. political system since she was an eighth-grader but never had seen the system in action.

“I’ve taken many courses on U.S. government, but sitting in a classroom reading from a textbook and actually participating in the system are completely different experiences,” Yang said. “Therefore I seized the chance to apply for the internship when I heard about it from school.”

Aside from academics, Yang enjoys playing the piano, figure skating, rollerblading, tennis, debate, foreign arts movies and Asian culture.

At John Bapst, she was president of the debate club and a member of the math team, international club, National Honor Society and the chamber ensemble. She was an AP Scholar with honors and was the winner of the Arcady Youth Music Competition in 2004.

Michaud said he was impressed with Yang’s professionalism and her ability to learn new things quickly, and is pleased that she plans to return to his office next summer.
