MaineHousing offers lead control program

Lead poisoning can do permanent damage including developmental delays, behavioral problems, hyperactivity, lowered intelligence and decreased growth. At toxic levels, it can cause stunted growth, mental retardation, severe brain damage, coma and even death. Lead can be ingested or inhaled, with poisoning occurring most often from renovations of older homes or from the deterioration of lead paint. Children under the age of 6 years are most vulnerable to lead poisoning.

MaineHousing’s Lead Hazard Control Program helps prevent lead poisoning by working with community action programs to provide funding to single-family households at or below 80 percent of the area median income, have children younger than 6 years of age and those living in a home built before 1978. Apartment owners who lease to low-income tenants also may qualify for funding for lead control measures.

MaineHousing offers a deferred loan of up to $16,000 to eligible homeowners and $10,000 per unit up to a maximum of 10 units for eligible apartment owners to take lead hazard control measures on their properties. These loans do not require monthly payments, and the entire loan will be forgiven provided the property is not sold within three years from the time the lead work is completed. To apply, call Penquis CAP, (800) 215-4942.
