Family skating

ORONO – The Penobscot Valley Hockey Conference will hold a family fun skate for youth ages 4-8 and their families 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at the Alfond Ice Arena. The schedule is: PVHC information and registration and hockey equipment rental for PVHC players, 1 p.m.; family fun skate, 1:30 p.m., no sticks or pucks, coaches and players available to help beginners; free snacks, 2:30 p.m. For information, call 949-3902 or e-mail vicepresident@pvhchockey.com.

Mountain trail run

ORLAND – The annual Great Pond Mountain Trail Run for runners of all ages will be held Sunday, Oct. 1, starting at Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery. A 1.5-mile primer race starts at 1 p.m.; the 5.5-mile main event on scenic and rugged trails and woods roads over the mountain begins at 1:30 p.m. Registration begins at noon in the hatchery parking lot. Trophies are available for the finishers in each class.

Free T-shirts will be given to preregistered runners. The deadline for preregistration is Friday, Sept. 29. Registration is $8 or $10, with proceeds benefiting Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust.

Runners who bring a first-time runner along will get 50 percent off his or her registration fee. For information, to preregister or to be a volunteer, call Dr. John Hunt at 469-3614 or e-mail jhhdvm@att.net.

Karate classes

ORONO – The Orono Parks and Recreation Department is offering karate classes Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Little Dragons I class for 3- and 4-year-olds will meet 3:15-3:45 p.m.; Little Dragons II for 5- and 6-year-olds, 4-4:30 p.m.; and Karate Kids class for children age 7-12, 4:45-5:30 p.m. Classes will be held at Asa Adams Elementary School.
