PROVIDENCE – Sophomore goalie Jasmine Phillips made eight saves to register her third straight shutout and junior striker Laura Harper extended her goal-scoring streak to five games as the undefeated Maine women’s soccer team earned a 1-0 upset win a Brown University team ranked 25th in the current Soccer America poll on Wednesday.
Harper took a pass from Laura Martel, beat a defender and fired a 25-yarder past Brown goalie Brenna Hogue just 23 seconds into the second half.
Maine is now 7-0-1 after posting its sixth straight win.
Hogue finished with four saves on 10 shots for 4-2-2 Brown, which outshot Maine 26-10.
Men’s Soccer
Husson 3, UM-Machias 0
At Bangor, Nathan Carter scored two goals and Tony Thompson added one as Husson blanked UM-Machias.
Jon Cowie had seven saves on 11 shots for the 4-1-1 Eagles.
Kellen Shaver stopped 14 out of 31 shots for 2-1-1 UM-Machias.
Bates 2, UMF 1
At Lewiston, Ithai Schori scored off a Duane Pelz pass 19 seconds into overtime to lift Bates past University of Maine-Farmington.
Pat Grater scored the tying goal for Bates at 1-1 in the second half. Pelz finished with two assists. Rob Munro made one save on three shots for the 2-2 Bobcats.
Kellen Brown netted the goal for UMF in the first half. Brian Lemont made four saves on 27 shots for the 1-3-1 Beavers.
