I would like to commend the organizers and supporters of the Susan G. Komen Maine Race for the Cure for another successful event. In fact, it was a record 10th year both in terms of participants (more than 3,200!) and money raised (approximately $175,00!, 75 percent of which stays right here in the community).
As a 10-year survivor myself, I am very proud and appreciative. I am, however, also disappointed that the Bangor Daily News chose not to cover this important community event. Although there was a lovely picture on page 3 the next day, there was no reporting, no other photos and therefore no mention not only of the community participants, survivor participants and high school teams, but none also of the hundreds of volunteers who make this event happen, many of whom were also teenagers from local high schools.
Shame on you for ignoring this important event. I would think any event that brings together this much support and participation, and for such a worthy cause, would certainly be worthy of more than just a mention by the largest daily newspaper in the state. It may happen every year, but until breast cancer stops killing so many women, and men, then it deserves our attention.
