Joseph Attean

Born on Christmas Day 1829, Joseph Attean is best known as Henry David Thoreau’s personal guide, but also had many other great accomplishments during his life.

He was the Penobscots’ first elected chief, although he would have been next in line to take over the position from his father, Chief John Attean, regardless of an election. Joseph Attean is credited with bringing new life to the tribe and moving beyond the political unrest that occurred during his father’s term.

Attean died on the Fourth of July 1870 before he could see the long-term impact of his political efforts. Known as one of the best river drivers and boatmen on the Penobscot River, Attean drowned while working on a log drive.
