Volunteers needed for salmon stocking project

The NOAA Fisheries Service is looking for volunteers to perform some essential work on Monday.

In conjunction with the Green Lake National Fish Hatchery and the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission, NOAA and ASC biologists will be marking Atlantic salmon as part of the annual stocking program.

Each fall NOAA, ASC and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service work together to clip the fins on about 140,000 salmon parr, which will be stocked in the Penobscot and Dennys Rivers during October. The clip is used as a way to identify the fish when they return as adults in two to four years.

The clipping session will be held at Green Lake National Fish Hatchery in Ellsworth On Monday through Thursday.

Volunteers can come for a half day – from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. – or stay for an entire day, but are advised to bring a lunch. Hatchery staffers will provide all the needed equipment, but volunteers should dress for the weather, as the clipping will take place outside, but under a roof.

To get to the Green Lake National Fish Hatchery, turn onto Route 180 (off Route 1A) in Ellsworth. Route 180 takes a turn about 11/2 miles from that intersection and crosses the dam at Graham Lake. The hatchery is about five miles north of the dam.

MYFGA banquet tonight

Maine’s Youth Fish & Game Association will hold its annual fundraising banquet tonight at the Old Town Elks Club.

The dinner will feature dinner, entertainment, and auctions. Door prize drawings will be held.

The event begins at 5 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for adults, $3 for youths age 5-15, and children under 5 get in free.
