CLINTON – A Winslow man was killed instantly Friday morning when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel on Interstate 95.

Joel Harriet, 37, was southbound about 4:30 a.m. when he crashed into the end of a section of guardrail, according to Maine State Trooper Jeffrey Beach.

Harriet was operating a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. Beach said the accident will be investigated using a data recorder that is in all 2006 General Motors vehicles.

“We will be able to download the last five seconds of information, which include the speed of the vehicle,” Beach said. At this point, however, Beach said he believes Harriet fell asleep. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Beach was assisted at the scene by Clinton Rescue and Fire and the Maine Department of Transportation.
