BANGOR – Sarah Porter was responsible for taking 10 of the 11 corner kicks that the Presque Isle girls soccer team earned Wednesday afternoon against John Bapst.
The Wildcats got good chances out of most of Porter’s kicks, but one she took early in the second half stood out from the rest.
Her kick went into the net – it was actually recorded as an own-goal off John Bapst goalie Caroline Cassling – and Presque Isle held on for a 1-0 win at the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center field.
“We didn’t panic,” said Porter, a sophomore. “We just played the way we can play and had fun. It’s about time we played that way.”
It was 9-1 Presque Isle’s second win over the Crusaders this year. The first was a 2-1 overtime victory.
Porter, who said she stepped in a divot – possibly one she made on an earlier kick – hit the ball towards the near post. As it curved towards the goal, Cassling tried to punch it out, but instead the ball went backwards and into the net.
“One corner shot and that was it,” John Bapst coach Ken Wood said.
The goal was credited to Angela Norsworthy because she was closest to the play. Porter was given an assist.
That Porter put in a corner kick wasn’t a surprise to Presque Isle coach Ralph Michaud.
“She’s a perfectionist,” he said. “If she doesn’t take a good corner during a game she’ll take 20 before the next practice ends. And you know they’ll be good in the next game.”
Once the Wildcats scored, they fell back on defense.
“We had one goal on them and both teams had a hard time scoring the whole game,” said Norsworthy, who has been working 11-hour days on the potato harvester at Buck Farms in Mapleton during the school’s harvest break. “We thought, we’re up 1-0, why not play more defense than offense.”
Norsworthy played a key role as the Wildcats tried to shut down Bapst forward Whitney Sinclair, who had missed several games because of a stress fracture. Sinclair did not play in Presque Isle’s first win.
Presque Isle had two defenders, Shaina Watanananuchit and Carmen Allen, shadowing Sinclair. That left a lot of space for Norsworthy and Porter to cover by themselves.
“The whole middle was wide open so we both had to play more defense than we ever have,” Porter said.
John Bapst (3-4-1) had a goal called off in the second half because a foul was called before the shot, but the Crusaders’ best chance came early in the game when Sinclair passed the ball up to Kristina Hambrock for a breakaway.
But Hambrock shot it right at PI goalie Molly Hamel for the save.
“We try to get them to keep the ball close as they can to their feet and go in as far as you can before you challenge,” Wood said. “I think she got excited and shot too quick.”
Hamel and Allisen Donovan combined for five saves on five shots. Cassling stopped 11 of 13 shots.
Michaud said five or six of his players are working for local farmers during the potato harvest this year.
