Catch and release

ST. ANDREWS, N.B. – The monthlong catch and release fishery that opened on the Penobscot on Sept. 15 was eagerly awaited by the Atlantic Salmon Federation, the Maine Council of ASF, and the council’s 24 affiliated river organizations.

“Catch and release is the key to making this fishery a success, and to ensure anglers can enjoy salmon fishing, following a six-year closure, for years to come,” said John Burrows, Maine council coordinator for the federation.

The federation educates anglers on the techniques of live release that entail choosing the appropriate equipment, carefully removing hooks, taking care not to exhaust the fish, keeping the fish in the water and refraining from fishing when water temperature is high and levels low.
