HERMON – The body of a missing Newburgh man was pulled from the Black Stream by Maine Warden Service divers Friday morning.
Officials said Glendon “Glen” Henderson, 62, drowned, and his body was recovered from a 9-foot pool of water just before 11 a.m.
Henderson frequently canoed the stream and was probably scouting the area for the coming deer season, Sgt. Roger Gay of the Maine Warden Service said.
The service got a call just before midnight, Gay said. At 1:15 a.m. Friday, search crews found a canoe overturned about a mile north of where the stream crosses the Fuller Road in town, Gay said. A lifejacket also was found.
Henderson’s body was recovered only 100 yards from where the overturned canoe was found.
The canoe had a motor on it, Gay said.
Henderson’s vehicle was parked on the side of the road where the stream crosses the Fuller Road, Gay said. Crews searched the area until 4:15 a.m., but some pools of the river were too deep for the ground teams. A dive team arrived in Hermon at 9:30 a.m. and began scouring the water at 10:30 a.m.
The Hermon Fire Department and deputies from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the search.
Henderson was last seen by his wife around noon Thursday in their home.
