On Sept. 16 my husband brought me to Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor to meet a legend, Donn Fendler.

Most of you already know who he is, but I am not from Maine and I only learned about him about three months ago when my husband bought me the book “Lost on a Mountain in Maine,” a true story about a 12-year-old boy who was lost for nine days in the woods.

I was so touched by that story that happened on Mount Katahdin in 1939 that it was a dream come true to meet that little boy in person. Only he is not a little boy anymore, he is 80. I was very impressed to learn that Mr. Fendler went on to serve his country for 30 years and since then has gone into many schools telling his story to children and teaching them about faith, hope and courage, all volunteering and all the donations going to different charities.

It was an honor for my husband and me to meet this wonderful person and I hope you readers will encourage their children to read the book. It made me cry, and there is a life lesson to learn from it, kind of coming out of the woods.
