Levant man who won car crashes SUV

LEVANT – A Levant man’s luck came to an end Wednesday morning when a spider apparently caused him to lose control of his sport utility vehicle so that it left the Stetson Road and struck a tree.

James Lee, 28, who last month was one of 11 people from across the country to win a new car from a Bangor McDonald’s restaurant, escaped serious injury when his 2003 Lincoln Navigator left the roadway about 9:20 a.m.

He lost control of the SUV when he tried to get a spider out of the car, Sgt. Keith Mercier of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Lee was traveling east on the Stetson Road in Levant on his way to work when his SUV swerved off the road, down a steep embankment and struck a tree, according to Mercier. The speed limit on the road is 45 mph.

The car was demolished, the deputy sheriff said, but Lee walked away with a bloody nose because of the deployment of his air bag, and a few scratches. Lee refused transport to a hospital, Mercier said.

Last month, Lee won a new Volvo XC90 at the McDonald’s on Broadway that is owned by Gary Eckmann. Lee found the right game piece to win the grand prize in the McDonald’s Are You Mac Enough? Pirates of the Caribbean Game.
