CHARLESTON, S.C. – A man found hanging over the side of his one-man sailboat during a race Tuesday afternoon in Charleston Harbor died from natural causes, authorities say.

The man has been identified as David Thompson, 55, of Bridgton, Maine, Deputy Coroner Judy Koelpin said Wednesday. Koelpin did not give a specific cause of death.

Racers and a rescue crew found Thompson nearly two hours into the Sunfish Championship Regatta race, Coast Guard spokesman Sean Schrum said. Thompson was pulled from the water, but later died at a nearby hospital.

The Sunfish Championship Regatta are annual sailboat races held this year near Charleston. The event started last Saturday and runs through this weekend.
