Children safe after bus, car collide on MDI

MOUNT DESERT – A group of local schoolchildren and their bus driver got a little bit of excitement Friday afternoon, but not much else, when a car collided with their bus, according to police.

Nobody was hurt in the accident, which occurred around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of routes 198 and 233, police said.

Officer Leigh Guildford said Emma Damon, 16, of Mount Desert was driving a 1989 Chevrolet sedan when she turned off Route 233 to head south on Route 198 toward the village of Northeast Harbor. She failed to notice the bus coming north in her direction and pulled out, striking its rear right corner with the front passenger side of her vehicle, he said.

Both Damon and the bus driver were wearing seat belts, according to Guildford. He estimated damage to each vehicle to be about $1,000.

The only impact the accident had on the 10 or so kids who were on the bus was that they got a little excited by all the commotion, he said.

“I doubt they even felt it,” he said of the collision.
