Gophers down UMaine

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women’s hockey team, the NCAA runner-up a year ago, received goals from five different players en route to a 5-2 win over the University of Maine in the Eastern Shootout tournament Friday evening.

Erica McKenzie’s power-play goal broke a 1-1 tie early in the second period, and Andrea Nichols made it 3-1 later in the period for the Gophers (1-0).

Anya Miller extended the lead to 4-1 with 6:22 remaining in the game, but Maine’s Vanessa Vani cut the lead to 4-2 with 1:31 remaining. Jenelle Philipczyk added an insurance goal just 17 seconds later.

Minnesota’s Gigi Marvin and Maine’s Taryn Peacock swapped first-period goals.

Brittony Chartier made nine saves for Minnesota, while Genevieve Turgeon had 47 stops for the 0-3 Black Bears.

Volleyball

UMBC defeats Maine

At Baltimore, the Retrievers had 201/2 blocks, including 14 assists from Amanda Willey, as University of Maryland Baltimore County downed the Black Bears 30-15, 27-30, 30-26, 30-23.

Ashley Oscars finished with 16 kills and a .406 serving percentage for the 9-9 Retrievers.

Lindsey Allman racked up 13 kills for 4-12 Maine while Shelly Seipp had 45 assists.
