Border patrol office nearly finished

BAILEYILLE – U.S. Border Patrol agents who regularly patrol the border between Canada and the United States soon will have a new home.

Construction on the more than $6 million site at the town’s industrial park on Routes 9 and 1 is expected to be completed Nov. 1. The nearly 25 border agents will be able to move into their new digs shortly after that.Construction on the garage and vehicle maintenance bays is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Town Manager Scott Harriman said Sunday he is pleased with this development in the town’s industrial park.

“Anytime you can put anything in your industrial park, it is good news for the town,” he said. “They built a very nice facility and we’re pleased to have them as tenants of the Woodland Commercial Park.”

The U.S. Border Patrol is building a similar facility in Jackman and that project remains on the same timeline as the Baileyville one.

A separate contract for the $6,432,890 Van Buren Border Patrol Station was awarded to CJP Associates of Caribou in April. Construction of that site began in June and is expected to be completed in November of next year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said in a report.

The new sites in Jackman and Baileyville are on a minimum of 10-acre lots and include a 10,800-square-foot building.

The Jackman station is being built on Route 6-15, about 2.5 miles east of U.S. Route 201.

The facility in Van Buren is being built on U.S. Route 1A at the former site of the Van Buren Drive-in Theater.

Last year, a combined construction contract for the Calais and Jackman border patrol stations was awarded in the amount of $12,696,000 to JCN Construction Co. of Manchester, N.H.

The Army Corps of Engineers previously rented space on the second floor of the Calais port of entry building at the Ferry Point Bridge. Corps officials said there was not enough space there to accommodate future staffing and equipment needs. Federal officials looked at several sites before settling on the industrial park in Baileyville.
