EMMC Auxiliary’s Kitchen Tour returning

One of last year’s new fundraisers for the Eastern Maine Medical Center Auxiliary proved to be so popular, and so successful, that it is returning this fall.

Auxiliary members and President Lynn Spooner cordially invite you to attend their second annual Kitchen Tour from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, in six area homes: three in Bangor and one each in Hampden, Veazie and Orono.

This year’s tour includes visits to what are described as “uniquely styled kitchens with a variety of antiquities of days past, and the modern conveniences of today.”

Tickets for the auxiliary Kitchen Tour are $20 each and are available in Bangor at the Grasshopper Shop and Rebecca’s in downtown Bangor; the EMMC Gift Shop and Pharmacy, Patrick’s Hallmark shops and at Westgate Pharmacy at the Healthcare Mall on Union Street.

Tickets are also available at Airline Pharmacy in Brewer and Hampden Natural Foods.

During your tour, at each kitchen, you will enjoy light refreshments that have been prepared by area caterers.

All proceeds from the tour benefit the Rosen Neonatal Intensive Care Union at EMMC.

Kathleen Parker reports that the third annual MaineGeneral Medical Center Walk for Hope begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, under the tent at Sam’s Club in Augusta.

The route takes walkers through the University of Maine-Augusta nature trails.

Parker describes the 5K events as “a noncompetitive fitness and leisure walk to raise funds and increase awareness for the medical center’s Breast Care Program.”

Registration forms are available on MaineGeneral’s Web site, www.mainegeneral.org or by calling 626-1809 or 872-4118.

The registration fee of $10 is waived for breast cancer survivors and those who may be unable to pay but would like to participate.

Walk supporters are urged to collect pledges from friends and family and walk individually or in teams since prizes will be awarded for the individual and the team raising the most money.

You also may wear dedication stickers and walk in honor or memory of friends or loved ones, or celebrate your own survival.

For more information, call the numbers above.

Arlene Newey wrote tables are available for rent for $10 each for those who want to participate in the Golden Harvest Grange No. 38 annual craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Grange on Route 2 in Carmel.

Newey wrote that the fundraiser will feature crafts, food and raffles, and you can purchase lunch there as well.

If you want to rent a table for this event, call 848-2994 or 848-5785.

The Great Strides for Mental Health Recovery Walk begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Eastside Boat Landing behind Fort Western and the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta. Registration for the walk begins at noon.

The walk is sponsored by the Advocacy Initiative Network of Maine, and registration pledge sheets can be obtained by calling AIN at (888) 375-5969.

Those who raise $10 or more in pledges receive a T-shirt.

All community members are invited to participate.

AIN is a statewide organization developed by, with and for customers of mental health services.

On behalf of the Hampden Children’s Day Committee, Amy Lorenzo thanks everyone “who came out to help and make the day a success.”

The annual August event produced lots of happy winners in the poster contest and parade, she wrote, and if you lost “an item of moderate value” that day, you can call her with a description of the item, which was not claimed at the lost-and-found booth during the celebration.

Suzanne Wagner of Maine Kids-Kin of Families and Children Together in Bangor e-mailed that she is “excited to announce our new Web site” which is www.mainekids-kin.org.

Wagner believes the “site will serve as a full resource site for people raising relatives’ children, the professionals who serve them, and people wanting to know more about kinship care.”

According to a press release, the site is designed to enable the public to learn more about Maine’s “grandfamilies,” enable those families to find resources to support the children they are raising, help professionals provide clients with the best services possible and keep members of the media up-to-date on programs, events and services of the organization.

If you would like more information about this new resource, call Barbara Kates at 941-2347 or e-mail bkates@mainekids-kin.org.
