Bangor secures No. 1 berth Girls soccer team ends regular season unbeaten (13-0-1)

Despite a scoreless tie against Hampden Saturday that put a slight blemish on the season, the Bangor girls soccer team found itself on top of the Eastern Maine Class A standings Tuesday morning.

And by the time Tuesday night’s game against Old Town finishes up, the 12-0-1 Rams could have sealed the program’s first undefeated record.

“I’m proud of the girls and I think they’re proud of themselves,” second-year coach Larry Smith said. “They’ve set a number of goals for themselves this season and that was one of them.”

Both the Bangor girls and boys, who were ranked second in their EM Class A standings, will play in the first KVAC North-South conference championship games Friday at Lawrence High in Fairfield. The Rams will represent the KVAC North.

The girls will face Morse of Bath at 4 p.m., followed by the boys (12-1-1) against Brunswick (13-0 as of Saturday) at 5:45.

Last year would have been the first KVAC championship games since Bangor, Brewer, Old Town, Hampden, and Nokomis of Newport joined the league, but the games were rained out.

Although the Bangor girls have a good shot at a 13-0-1 season – they beat Old Town 4-0 in the teams’ first game of the season – they may not be able to retain the No. 1 spot when the final Heal points are released Oct. 16.

That’s because Morse, which had been sitting in the top spot for most of the season, is to play Mount Ararat of Topsham Tuesday afternoon. If the Shipbuilders win, they’ll have enough points to pass Bangor, Smith said. If the Eagles win, Bangor will have the top seed for the playoffs.

Morse, which was undefeated until a loss against Brunswick last week, already owns a 1-0 win over Mount Ararat.

If Bangor does maintain the No. 1 seed, it could be the first time the program has ended the season on top of the rankings.

Street & Smith’s touts Cimino

It’s not even officially preseason time for basketball, but McAuley of Portland star Ashley Cimino keeps earning early honors.

Cimino, the 6-foot-2 senior guard who made a verbal commitment to attend women’s collegiate powerhouse Stanford earlier this summer, was recently named to the Street & Smith’s high school girls basketball preseason fifth team.

Street & Smith’s publishes well-regarded annuals for college and professional sports.

Cimino is the No. 72-ranked player in the Class of 2007, according to the Hoopgurlz.com Hot 100 Rankings. She was the 2006 Gatorade Maine Player of the Year as well as a first-team All-Mainer and a member of the Southern Maine Activities Association first team.

She was also named to the 10-member USA Today Underclassmen All-USA girls team.

In her junior year with the Lions, Cimino averaged 17.4 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.1 blocks, 2.0 steals, and 1.5 assists per game. She shot 63.2 percent from the floor and 72.6 percent from the line.
