A man who told police he had been drinking and “bored” used a lighter to ignite some leaves, and the fire spread to a roughly 50-by-50-foot area before it was put out by the Bangor Fire Department.

Firefighters and police were called to the area of Cleveland Avenue and Filmore Street, near the red-and-white checkered tower, about 1 p.m. Monday for a report of a woods fire.

A worker with an engineering firm doing test borings near the tower told police that he had seen an apparently intoxicated man light the leaves on fire.

The man, Randall Tomah, 42, of Bangor, was about 50 feet into the woods, sitting beside an area of the burning grass, Bangor police Officer Marty McCrea reported.

Tomah admitted to starting the fire, telling McCrea that he had been “looking for something to do.”

McCrea arrested him on a charge of arson and took him to Penobscot County Jail.

Someone keyed seven motor vehicles at the Van Syckle Lincoln Mercury dealership in Bangor sometime late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

The damage was discovered about 8 a.m. and was estimated at $13,000, according to the police report.

Several motor vehicles were broken into in recent days in Bangor. On Union Street a vehicle was left unlocked, and early Monday morning the owner discovered that it had been burglarized. A pack of cigarettes and some loose change were taken, the resident reported.

On Tuesday, it was reported that a digital camera worth about $350 was taken from a motor vehicle parked on Maple Street. The owner said she always left the vehicle unlocked when it’s in the driveway. She last had seen the camera on Sept. 27 and noticed it was gone three days later, according to the police report.
