COREY DEWITT
Dewitt, a senior on the Ellsworth cross country team, won the 2.65-mile Hancock County Championship race Saturday in a time of 14 minutes, 30 seconds, holding off his closest competition by 33 seconds. He also finished first in the 5K Maine Festival of Champions last week with a time of 15:59.
Small School (Classes C-D)
COLLIN BATES
Bates, a junior on the Orono football team, scored the game-winning touchdown on a 13-yard run in a 35-32 victory over Stearns Friday. He also rushed for the 2-point conversation after his score. Bates ran for 208 yards on 13 carries (16 yards per carry) and had a touchdown earlier in the game.
GIRLS
Big School (Classes A-B)
LAUREN MALTZ
Maltz, a senior sweeper on the Hampden girls soccer team, anchored a Bronco defense last week that allowed four shots on goal by Nokomis in Hampden’s 1-0 win and nine shots by Bangor in a 0-0 double-overtime tie against the Rams, who were 12-0 entering the game. Maltz has been the starting sweeper for all 60 games of her high school career and has averaged 77 minutes per game.
Small School (Classes C-D)
SARAH FRENCH
The Mattanawcook Academy field hockey goalie, junior French helped the Lynx pick up a big win and a tie against Piscataquis and Stearns, respectively. French made four saves on eight shots in a 2-1 win over the Pirates and stopped 12 of 19 Minutemen shots to help the Lynx finish the regular season at 5-5-4. She also picked up a shutout in a 0-0 tie against Orono.
