ELLSWORTH – It’s been a beautiful fall for the undefeated Ellsworth girls soccer team.
So why not wrap up the home portion of the regular season with a pair of beautiful goals?
The Ellsworth Eagles got first-half goals from Emily Lyons and Lauren Peer en route to a 2-0 win over the George Stevens of Blue Hill Eagles Wednesday night at Del Luce Stadium.
It was a key victory for 12-0-1 Ellsworth, which will pick up major Heal points because GSA is in second place in Eastern Maine Class C.
Ellsworth, which is in Class B, might not be able to overtake Class B No. 1 Winslow because the Black Raiders (13-1) beat Rockland 4-0 Tuesday. But the prospect of an undefeated season was just as enticing.
“The biggest thing I was thinking about was that we’d be the only undefeated team in Eastern Maine [Class B],” said senior defender Maggie Seavey. “We took a big step today and we just need to keep it up.”
Ellsworth’s regular-season finale will be Friday against MDI.
After a couple of early Ellsworth chances went by the wayside Wednesday, Lyons came off the bench for the game winner with 28 minutes, 11 seconds left in the first half.
Left wing Casey Wyman started the play when she passed the ball to Lyons on the right wing. Lyons, a sophomore, made it her own with a nifty fake to the left, forcing a GSA defender to go right.
Once she was clear of the defender Lyons kicked the ball into the upper left corner of the net, out of the reach of George Stevens goalie Kayla Eaton.
Lyons said she thought about crossing it back to Wyman instead of taking the shot.
“She’s quick and always there to get the ball,” said Lyons, who had the tying goal in a 1-1 double-overtime game against Bucksport on Oct. 2, another pointworthy outing for Ellsworth. “But once I was past [the defender] it was all open.”
Peers also went to the upper left corner of the net for a penalty kick 5:02 before halftime. Ellsworth was awarded the PK for a GSA hand ball in the penalty area.
George Stevens came out with a lot more intensity in the second half, outshooting Ellsworth at one point. Alida Peake had a chance with less than 15 seconds left when she booted a direct kick from about 35 yards out but Ellsworth goalie Catie Cravens made the save.
“I think when you play a team as up-tempo as that, sometimes it’s tough to get in synch,” GSA coach Steve Bemiss said. “… We just stepped it up, played a more physical game and tried to limit the number of touches we had, one-touch instead of a two-touch, things like that.”
Ellsworth was caught a bit off guard by GSA’s style of play, which was a bit different from Ellsworth’s 2-1 win in Blue Hill.
“Last game it was more, they just booted it and chased it,” Seavey said. “This time there was a lot more passing. [GSA] was a lot more coordinated. All of the sudden they were passing, and it was confusing.”
Eaton had a stellar game with 11 saves on 14 shots. She saved all six Ellsworth shots in the second half.
Cravens also held up well with four saves on six shots.
JV: 1-1
