Music lovers who remember poodle skirts, jukeboxes and the fun of hanging around soda fountains should really enjoy Adelines’ Sweet Shoppe, featuring the Sweet Adelines Heart of Maine Chorus at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at the Brewer Auditorium.

Admission is $7, free for children age 12 and under.

Tickets can be purchased from any Sweet Adelines member or at Knapp’s Music Center, 51 Main St. in Bangor. Tickets also will be available at the door, and refreshments are free.

The organization’s chosen charity for this season is Spruce Run, the domestic violence agency serving Penobscot County. Representatives of the agency will be at the show with information about the organization and its programs.

Sweet Adelines member Gloria Hodgdon reports the show, featuring music from the 1940s and ’50s, will include quartets and ensembles, and a special guest appearance by Renaissance, female singers from the University of Maine in Orono.

You also will have the opportunity to meet the new chorus director, Mary Anne McFadden, a transplanted Californian and fellow Sweet Adelines member who competed internationally with the 130-member Pacific Empire Chorus and recorded several CDs with Anima Schola, a liturgical music group based in Connecticut.

On behalf of the Amherst-Aurora Church of Christ, Geneva Frost invites you to attend a public supper at 5 p.m. today at the Osborn Community Building on Route 179.

Frost wrote that the site is located “4 miles from the junction of Routes 9 and 179.”

Admission is $6 for the New England boiled dinner that also includes a variety of desserts.

Proceeds benefit the church’s fuel budget.

Songwriter-lyricist Carolyn Currie appears in concert at 7 tonight at the Coffee House at the East Sangerville Grange.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12.

Proceeds from the concert benefit the Womancare/Aegis Association that assists people affected by domestic violence who live in Piscataquis County.

In recognition of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Maria Staples of Penquis Community Action Program wants to be sure that our readers know about a “great program” that is being offered by Penquis CAP’s Breast Health Resource Initiative.

The program is available “to help women in Piscataquis County get the care they deserve,” Staples wrote.

“The objective of the program is to increase access to breast cancer screenings, pay for the screening services for women who qualify, and provide education and information to increase awareness of breast health and the importance of family history in determining breast cancer risk.”

Women in Piscataquis County between the ages of 28 and 64 who do not have health insurance, or who have insurance that does not cover mammograms, should call Staples at 973-3586 or Izzy Warren at 564-2847 “to see if you qualify” for the program, Staples wrote.

Women age 40 to 64 who do not live in Piscataquis County, have little or no health insurance, and who meet certain income guidelines can learn more about programs that could help provide free mammograms and Pap tests by contacting the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program, (800) 350-5180.

Staples also reminds readers that since National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was initiated in 1985, “mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older, and breast cancer deaths have declined.”

To continue that trend, detecting the disease in its earliest stages is necessary.

Betty Littlefield and members of the Brooks Historical Society invite you to Heritage Day, 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Pilley Homestead on Route 7 in Brooks.

Littlefield said the event will feature refreshments and demonstrations of spinning, rug hooking and braiding, bird carving, log hewing and cedar shake splitting.

Bangor High School librarian Debe Averill is offering three workshops for parents of Bangor High School students.

The workshops will cover the use of catalogs and research databases provided in the library and from home, including InfoCentre, MARVEL, Infotrac, Maps101, Gale Virtual Reference Library, World News Digest and others.

The workshops are 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18; 3-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19; and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19.

There is no charge for the workshops, and other times can be arranged.
