Pond lifts Hampden by Rams Broncos advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinal vs. Oxford Hills

HAMPDEN – Sarah Pond scored two goals as seventh-seeded Hampden Academy shut out No. 10 Bangor 5-0 in Eastern Maine Class A preliminary playoff field hockey action Saturday.

Anna Lataille, Mindy Grover and Tina Lumino each added a goal for Hampden. Katie Hessert stopped all seven shots she faced for the Broncos.

Mikaela Marshall-Holmes made 12 saves on 17 shots for the Rams.

Hampden advanced to a Tuesday quarterfinal matchup in South Paris against No. 2 Oxford Hills (10-3-1).

Girls soccer

Washington Academy 4, Shead 0

At Eastport, Kayla Wood, Samantha Rodriguez, and Andi Fannery each scored unassisted goals in the first half to lead the Raiders of East Machias to the Down East Athletic Conference title.

Bry Nicely added an unassisted goal in the second half for the winners, and goalie Irene Lewey had eight saves on 10 shots.

Dorothy Pottle stopped 12 of 18 shots for Shead.

Medomak Valley 3, MCI 0

At Pittsfield, Anna Lufkin scored two goals to lift Medomak Valley of Waldoboro over Maine Central Institute.

Meredith Wiemer scored with 7:47 left in the first half for the 7-6-1 Panthers. Alison Cornforth and Rachel Keefe combined to block nine of 13 shots.

Bianca Asaro made nine saves on 18 shots for 5-7-2 MCI.

Football

Hampden 61, Old Town 27

At Old Town, Bob Seger rushed 14 times for 203 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Hampden Academy past Old Town on Friday.

Kyle Ross added 104 yards on 12 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Broncos. Hampden totaled 482 rushing yards.

Shawn Smith had a 36-yard touchdown run for Hampden. Matt Osborne added a three-yard scoring run and David Piete had a one-yard touchdown rush.

Jarrett Lukas caught a touchdown pass and ran in for a score for Old Town.
