It was well worth the round trip – all 460 miles of it – for David Herr of Canaan, Vt.
The 41-year-old Herr cruised to victory in Sunday’s Mount Desert Island Marathon, finishing in 2 hours, 35 minutes, 16 seconds.
Ellsworth High School running coach Andy Beardsley of Surry was second in 2:40:41 while one of his former runners, Eric Rudolph of Sullivan, was third in 2:47:25.
Erik McCarthy of Old Town was fourth in 2:49:38 and Brian Waters of Marietta, Ga., placed fifth in 2:51:27.
Debra Moreau of Turner won the women’s division in 3:16:24. Lara Judson of Mount Desert, the 2005 champion, was second in 3:23:31 and Sharon Mitchell of Raymond, N.H., took third in 3:23:51.
Amanda Dreyer of New York City came in fourth in 3:26:39.
