Houlton man gets 10 years in child pornography case

BANGOR – A Houlton man in state prison for sexual abuse of a minor was sentenced on Tuesday in U.S. District Court to 10 years in prison for possession of child pornography.

Roy L. Rogers, 45, also was sentenced in federal court to 15 years of supervised release after he completes his sentence in federal prison.

Rogers now is serving a six-year sentence at the Maine State Prison in Warren for sexual abuse of a minor. All but 12 months of the federal sentence will be consecutive to the state sentence, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Rogers faced a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on the federal charge for having images of child pornography on his computer.

Because the state and federal charges stemmed from the same conduct, the mandatory minimum 10-year federal sentence that applies to convicted sex offenders charged with possession of child pornography does not apply in Rogers’ case, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Rogers was sentenced in July 2005 in Aroostook County Superior Court in Houlton to 15 years in prison with all but six years suspended. He also was ordered to undergo sex offender counseling and to register as a sex offender for life.

He was arrested in July 2004 by the Houlton Police Department and indicted by the Aroostook County grand jury the following September. The indictment charged that between January 2003 and January 2004 Rogers photographed himself having sex with two girls, both under the age of 13.

Rogers was indicted in federal court on the child pornography charges in July 2005. Rogers admitted that he had images on his computer depicting child pornography downloaded from the Internet when he pleaded guilty in June 2006 to the charge.
