HOULTON – The Maine State Police arrested an Oklahoma man at the port of entry Tuesday afternoon and charged him as being a fugitive from justice.

Shawn Cooper, 31, was being held in Aroostook County Jail at Houlton on Thursday.

Sgt. Dave McPherson of the state police said Cooper would have the right to ask for bail. He did not know whether Cooper had had a court appearance since his arrest.

In the meantime, Cooper is being held for voluntary extradition, or court action if he does not waive extradition.

He reportedly is wanted by law enforcement in Oklahoma City on warrants alleging that he performed lewd acts with a juvenile under age 16.

Information on the warrant against Cooper was sketchy Thursday. It also was not known how he got into Canada or how long he had been there.

According to a news release from Sgt. Tom Pelletier of the state police, Trooper Shawn Querze arrested Cooper at about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Cooper, who was taken to the port of entry at Houlton from Campbellton, New Brunswick, by officials of Canada Naturalization and Immigration, was taken into custody as soon as he crossed into the U.S.

Pelletier said Cooper had not said how long he was in Canada when found by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police earlier this week.

“He has been unwilling to give us any information,” Pelletier said Thursday.

Querze had the day off and could not be reached Thursday.

Pelletier said American officials at the border contacted the Maine State Police about Cooper.
