BELMONT – A pickup truck struck and killed a woman walking to her mailbox Monday morning.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said that Esther Farrar, 67, of Belmont was killed instantly when she was hit by a 1999 Ford pickup driven by Woodrow Carter, 38, of Morrill, who was on his way to work.

Farrar was crossing Route 3 to check on her mail when she was struck in the eastbound lane of the road about 6:15 a.m. Farrar was wearing dark clothing, and it was raining at the time, McCausland said.

No charges were expected to be filed against the driver. Four state troopers investigated the crash.
