Home in Belmont destroyed by fire

BELMONT – A multistory home built over a garage on Cornerstone Road was destroyed Saturday night by a fire of unknown origin.

The home, owned by Neal and Kim Wood, located on a dead end off Route 3, will be inspected by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, most likely today, Fire Chief Ronald Wellman said Sunday.

Neal Wood and his son Cornelius were home at the time the fire broke out, but they were able to escape unharmed, Wellman said.

It appears the fire may have started in a bedroom, he said. The blaze, reported at 8:29 p.m., took firefighters from five towns three hours to extinguish.

“Flames were coming through the roof when I got there,” Wellman said, and the whole interior of the attic was on fire.

The living area was severely damaged, Wellman said, to the extent that the family cannot live there. He said the family has made arrangements for a place to stay, and he believes the home is insured.

The fire chief estimated the house to be a total loss, but an insurance company will make the final determination, he said.

There also were no injuries to firefighters, who came from Belmont, Morrill, Searsmont, Waldo and Montville. They cleared the scene around 11:30 p.m., Wellman said.
