RICHMOND – Officials are investigating a fire that destroyed 300 bales of hay Sunday night.
The fire at Roseberry Farm is being investigated as a possible arson because police received a report on Saturday that somebody had tried to set the bales on fire, said Richmond Fire Chief Andrew Pierce.
The bales, which were valued at $12,000, were stacked on top of one another. Firefighters drew more than 120,000 gallons of water from a nearby brook to put out the blaze.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office has been investigating a series of barn fires this month. Two barn fires in Albion and one in Thomaston have been determined to be arson.
The office is not investigating the Richmond fire because no structure was involved, said Public Safety Department spokesman Stephen McCausland.
