Month set aside for lung cancer awareness

AUGUSTA – The governor has declared November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in Maine.

Lung cancer causes more deaths in the United States than any other cancer. Over 60 percent of new lung cancers are diagnosed in people who never smoked or who quit smoking decades ago, according to the Lung Cancer Alliance, headquartered in Washington, D.C.

In Maine alone, 960 of 1,030 people diagnosed with lung cancer this year will die from the disease.

The Lung Cancer Alliance is dedicated to patient support and advocacy for people living with lung cancer or at risk for the disease.

The organization’s initiatives are aimed at making the fight against lung cancer a priority for more people. For more information, visit www.lungcanceralliance.org/
