BANGOR – Students in the department of Building Construction Technology at Eastern Maine Community College are donating their time and skills to construct the new pool house and equipment building at Dakin Pool on Stillwater Avenue, it was announced this week.

The in-kind donation to the campaign for the pool is valued at $10,000, and construction will begin sometime in November, according to a press release.

“The support from Eastern Maine Community College is incredibly generous and has already helped us to leverage additional in-kind support from area tradespeople and suppliers,” Tom Sawyer Jr., honorary campaign chairman, said in a prepared release.

The campaign will fund five projects – a 28-by-36-foot pool house to include restrooms, a first aid station, lifeguard office and outside showers; a new fence to create a large grassy picnic and play area adjacent to the pool; repairs to the pool deck; a new walkway; and a 10-by-14-foot equipment building.

To date, $88,798 has been donated to the campaign, including a $25,000 grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation and a site plan done by Paul Brody of WBRC Architects-Engineers, worth $4,000.

The Friends of Dakin Pool, the driving force behind the project, is hoping to have the hole dug and the foundation poured by Nov. 9.

“The weather will drive their schedule,” Jim Ring, Bangor city engineer, said.
