For those who want to attend 10th annual WABI TV-5 Real Heroes Breakfast, which begins at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Bangor Civic Center, the word is there are only 10 corporate tables remaining.

American Red Cross Pine Tree Chapter executive director Suzan Bell reports most of the 60 tables have been sold for what can only be described as one of the most heart-warming and moving breakfast events in our area.

Chaired by Arnold “Bucky” Gahagan of the HRH Northern New England insurance agency, the event honors local Maine heroes.

Bell believes this is one of the best ways “to celebrate the spirit of putting personal needs aside to help others,” and I can attest that hearing and watching the stories of these Real Heroes who live among us is an experience that, on occasion, can move you to tears.

The event sponsor, WABI TV-5, is joined by award sponsors Pottle’s Transportation, Eastern Maine Healthcare-Capital Ambulance, H.O. Bouchard, TD Banknorth and Bangor Savings Bank. Nomination sponsors are the Bangor Daily News and Cumulus Broadcasting.

Jan Dowd reports the second Singles Mixer for the 50-60ish group that is in the process of organizing is 6-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, at Cafe Nouveau on Hammond Street in Bangor.

Admission is $20 for wine and hors d’oeuvres and the opportunity to mix and mingle with others of your age group.

Dowd said the plan is to continue meeting monthly the last Monday of each month at Cafe Nouveau, with the exception of December when the group will meet Monday, Dec. 18.

Tickets for the Stearns High School performing arts department production “The Secret Garden” are now on sale.

The play, set in 1906 British-controlled India, will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9; Friday, Nov. 10; and Saturday, Nov. 11, at Stearns High School in Millinocket.

Cindy Ingerson, of the Millinocket Performing Arts Boosters, reports tickets are $5 each and can be purchased in advance at Thirteen Moons on Central Street in Millinocket, and will be available at the door for each performance.

For people interested in learning more about the programs and activities of United Bikers of Maine, Elaine Morey wants you to know Hancock County UBM hosts its County Meeting the last Tuesday of each month and will gather this month for dinner at 6 p.m. followed by the business meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, at Pat’s Pizza on Route 3 in Ellsworth.

Wondering what to do on New Year’s Eve?

Well, wonder no more.

Sally Bates of Bangor Center Corp wants you to SAVE THE DATE for a fun time in the heart of the Queen City when you join the throng welcoming in the New Year Sunday, Dec. 31, in downtown Bangor.

Among the activities already on the schedule are a public supper and dance at the Unitarian-Universalist Church, chamber music and jazz in Bangor City Hall Council Chambers, blues music at Bagel “Blues” Central, music and card games at Hammond Street Senior Center, movies at the Bangor Opera House and, of course, the midnight ball drop.

Our historic Bangor Band, which was established in 1859, is believed to be this country’s second-oldest community band.

At its annual meeting in September, Bob Pentland was elected to serve as band president with vice president Steve Egland; treasurer Sue Willey McKay, secretary Dianna Wyman and members at large Don Menninghaus, Billy Miller, Jean Roberts and Lori Wingo.

In a recent e-mail, Pentland expressed the band’s gracious appreciation to the sponsors of its 2006 Summer Concert Series, Bangor Savings Bank, Merrill Bank, TD Banknorth, People’s Heritage Bank, Rudman & Winchell, Bangor Daily News, Miller Drug and Bangor Parks and Recreation Department.
