Ferguson (2 TDs) helps Husson knock off Div. I-AA La Salle

PHILADELPHIA – The Husson College Eagles spotted La Salle a first quarter touchdown, then came up with three interceptions and shut out the Explorers for the final 54 minutes to earn a 17-7 football victory over a Division I-AA nonscholarship program Saturday.

Freshman tailback Bryan Ferguson carried 32 times for 137 yards and a score and also caught an 18-yard touchdown pass to pace Husson (5-4).

Josh Lemieux and Jon Tefft made interceptions to set up Eagles scores, while Ramael Barton also picked off a pass.

Quarterback David Chase completed nine of 30 passes for 116 yards and was not intercepted. Jeremy Shorey caught four passes for 66 yards and Andre Wildman made four grabs for 32 yards for Husson College of Bangor.

La Salle (2-6) scored on its second possession when Joe Procopio found Lou Russo on a 56-yard TD pass. The 7-0 score stood until 3:28 left in the third quarter when Darren Gauthier cashed in on the Lemieux interception with a 31-yard field goal.

Still trailing, Husson put together an eight-play, 66-yard scoring drive midway through the fourth quarter. Chase capped the march with an 18-yard scoring toss to Ferguson as the Eagles took the lead.

La Salle had the ball for only three plays before Tefft’s interception gave Husson the ball back. The Eagles went 33 yards on 10 plays and took 4:37 off the clock with Ferguson scoring on a 1-yard run with 1:31 to play to clinch the win.

Ross Salovitch paced the Husson defense with eight tackles and Barton was in on 61/2 hits.

Colby 10, Bates 7 (4OT)

At Lewiston, Brian Bachow’s 22-yard field goal in the fourth overtime period lifted Colby College of Waterville to victory over winless Bates in the first game of this year’s Colby-Bates-Bowdoin series.

Bates (0-6) took a 7-0 lead in the third quarter when Terence Ryan sacked Colby quarterback Justin Smith and forced a fumble at the Colby 7, which lineman Eric Obeng scooped up and ran in for the touchdown.

The White Mules (2-6) evened the game at 7-7 early in the fourth quarter as Smith’s 37-yard run keyed a 57-yard touchdown drive that was capped by a 1-yard plunge by Chris Bashaw.

At Middletown, Conn., the Cardinals put points on the board in each quarter to hand the Polar Bears their fifth consecutive loss.

Phil Banks rushed for 69 yards and scored two TDs for Wesleyan (3-3), while Zach Librizzi completed 15 of 26 passes for 121 yards.

Jeff Smith led Bowdoin College of Brunswick with 46 yards rushing while Oliver Kell completed 11 of 22 throws for 90 yards The Polar Bears lost three fumbles while the Cardinals didn’t commit any turnovers.

S. Vermont 14, UMaine Club 0

At Manchester, Vt., The Southern Vermont Storm lived up to its nickname by marching 82 yards on its opening drive, scoring, and not looking back in driving rain and temperatures in the low 40’s.

Shawn Morrison capped the drive with a 42-yard TD run. In the second quarter, the Storm doubled its lead on Paul Redding’s 74-yard TD run off a reverse play.

The Maine Club team recovered two Storm fumbles, but couldn’t turn those turnovers into points and punch into the end zone.

Both teams will enter the playoffs in two weeks, with UMaine hosting the Central Maine Warriors Nov. 11 at Morse Field in Orono.
