BATH – A land and sea search for one of three boaters whose craft capsized in the Kennebec River was suspended Saturday as strong winds and torrential rains moved into the area.

Richard Drouin Jr., 38, of Auburn last was seen when the 16-foot boat struck a cable near the old Carleton Bridge at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, dumping the three occupants into the water, said Sgt. Paul Joyce of the Maine Marine Patrol.

Drouin’s father, Richard Drouin, 60, of Auburn, and Philip Stevens, 39, of the Auburn area, were rescued by a Bath Iron Works security officer.

The elder Drouin was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with cuts, bruises and possible broken bones.

Stevens was released after treatment at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

The three were riding in the outboard-powered craft from Waterfront Park to the mooring where the elder Drouin kept his 36-foot boat.

Joyce said the men had come out from the navigable channel toward Bath Iron Works when the boat struck a horizontal cable several feet above the water that was being used by contractors while working on the bridge.

The Coast Guard and the Marine Patrol searched the river through the night but found no sign of the missing man. The search continued Saturday morning along the shore before it was suspended because of weather conditions.
