I will be voting Green in the gubernatorial race next month. At the age of 68, and a longtime believer in the political system, it is clear to me that politics as usual has become irrelevant.
Gov. Baldacci proclaims economic progress while at the same time supporting the despoiling and industrialization of Passamaquoddy Bay and the development of LNG on the sacred lands of the native peoples. His vision of Down East Maine resembles the New Jersey shore. Halliburton and its subsidiaries lie drooling in the wings awaiting his victory.
His Republican opponent is another boring clone of George II who would follow the right-wing party line from Aroostook to Cumberland counties, oppressing women’s rights and reducing aid to education and human services.
Neither has the courage to speak out against the obscenity of the estimated $5 billion weekly expenditure of the war in Iraq nor has had the insight to see its connection with the impoverishment of our Maine citizens as we face another Down East winter.
A pox on both their houses.
